The Inflation Reduction Act created landmark provisions to improve health care access and prescription drug affordability in our country. Already, this life-saving legislation has helped 15 million Americans save an average of $800 a year on their health insurance premiums. Most notably, for the first time in our nation’s history this law grants Medicare the authority to negotiate with pharmaceutical corporations to keep costs of medicines down. Additionally, as of January 1, 2025, 50 million Medicare Part D enrollees will be protected against the skyrocketing costs of medications, as there will be a newly implemented $2,000 annual cap on out-of-pocket costs for prescription drug products.
We cannot afford to lose this incredible progress. With some Congressional candidates across the nation calling for the repeal of the Inflation Reduction Act, we asked Maryland candidates to take a stand and commit to protecting the health care access and prescription drug provisions of this law. We are pleased to share that ten candidates have made this commitment.
Candidates who have committed to protecting the life-saving health care provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act include: Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Governor Larry Hogan, both running for US Senate; Blane Miller in the (1st District), Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski, Jr. (2nd District), State Senator Sarah Elfreth (3rd District), Representative Glenn Ivey (4th District), Representative Stony Hoyer (5th District), April Delaney (6th District), Representative Kweisi Mfume (7th District), Representative Jamie Raskin (8th District)
The Committee to Protect Health Care has asked candidates around the country their stance on protecting the Inflation Reduction Act; and Maryland resident Larry Zarzecki is calling on the new President to make the same commitment to protecting this important law. You can view the video summarizing this outreach below and read the letters he has sent to Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump here.
