The Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition will hold a press conference January 9, 2017 at 10:30AM in Room 150 of the House Office Building, Annapolis, to announce a health insurance down payment plan to help uninsured Maryland residents get health care coverage. This new proposal, which will be introduced by Senator Brian Feldman and Delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk, the Co-Chairs of the Maryland Health Insurance Coverage Protection Commission, would replace the recently gutted federal individual mandate with an innovative new policy which will build on the health care progress already made in Maryland under the Affordable Care Act. The enclosed one-pager about the plan is embargoed until 10:30AM on January 9th.
Speaking at the press conference will be Senator Brian Feldman, Senator Jim Rosapepe and Delegates Joseline Pena-Melnyk and Cheryl Glenn, Stan Dorn of Families USA, Dr. Leana Wen of the Baltimore City Health Department, Rev. Franklin Lance from the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council, Gerald Stansbury from the NAACP and Vincent DeMarco of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative and the Health Care For All! Coalition.
“The Affordable Care Act has been a great success in Maryland and we need to protect it from President Trump and Congress,” said Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative. “With this new health insurance down payment plan, our state can build on this success to stabilize our insurance market and help even more Marylanders get the care they need at a price they can afford.”
“We applaud Maryland legislators’ swift response to protect thousands of hard-working Maryland families from federal efforts to repeal the coverage gains achieved under the Affordable Care Act,” said Stan Dorn of Families USA. ” When the federal government stops enforcing the ACA’s individual mandate, Maryland’s innovative policy will turn the ACA’s penalties into down payments that help Marylanders obtain their own quality, affordable health insurance.”
