A first-of-its-kind bill that authorizes the Maryland attorney general to file lawsuit against drug manufactures over suspected price gouging will head to the governor’s desk.
House Bill 631 prohibits drug manufacturers from unconscionable price increases on off-patent generic drugs — those that cannot be directly tied to costs to the production of the medication.
The law is the first of its kind in the country.
Vincent DeMarco, president of Maryland Health Care for All, said the bill could have an effect on drug prices nationwide.
“It’s a start,” DeMarco said. “We hope other states are going to follow.”
The bill now heads to Gov. Larry Hogan.
The 90 day legislative session ends Monday night at midnight.
