“The Maryland General Assembly appears to be on its way to expanding the authority of its Prescription Drug Affordability Board, empowering the first such entity in the nation to find ways to bring down medication prices costs for all residents.
The Senate passed legislation allowing for the expansion Wednesday night, following a House vote last month to do the same — setting up the law to be signed by Gov. Wes Moore (D) after the two chambers reconcile any differences in the separate bills. Moore made lowering drug costs a key campaign promise, making advocates of the law confident that their greatest hurdle has been cleared.
“Ecstatic,” said lobbyist Vincent DeMarco, president of the Maryland Health Care for All Coalition, when asked how he felt about the bill’s passage through both chambers. “We’ve been working on this for years. It’s not easy to overcome the power of big Pharma, but Maryland is leading the way. And Governor Moore has a lot to do with it.”
