In the race for the Maryland Senate 38th District seat, one candidate stands out for his leadership on an issue that affects virtually every family in this area: the soaring costs of prescription drugs.

Costs for lifesaving drugs continue to go up, and many people in this area simply cannot afford medications that would allow them to lead healthy lives.

The system is rigged in favor of drug manufacturers, but we are working to change that. And Sen. Jim Mathias has been a great partner to our organization, the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative, as we passed important legislation during the past two years to bring down costs.

He has also committed to supporting critically important legislation in the 2019 General Assembly session to establish a Prescription Drug Affordability Board, which will ensure people in Maryland are charged fair and affordable costs for their drugs.

Our group has sent mailers to voters throughout the 38th District — Republicans, Democrats and independents — to educate them about Sen. Mathias’ strong record on this issue.

And we urge all Marylanders to learn more about this issue by going to healthcareforall.com.

Vincent DeMarco is president of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative.
