Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative Statement About Extension of Easy Enrollment Tax Check-Off Program and COVID-19 Special Open Enrollment Period

Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative Deputy Director Stephanie Klapper released the following statement today:

“We commend the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange for extending two vital programs that are helping Marylanders enroll in free or affordable health insurance during this public health crisis. In one case, the state is extending the Maryland Easy Enrollment Health Insurance Program through July 15, when state income tax returns are now due. This program allows people without insurance to start the enrollment process by simply checking a box on their tax returns. Thousands of Marylanders have already checked the box and we are grateful that there will be more time for others across the state to take advantage of this easy-to-use tool.

“We are also pleased that the Exchange has extended its COVID-19 special enrollment period so that people without health insurance can explore plans and sign up through June 15. This is a smart move that will allow many more people to sign up for health insurance during an uncertain time. We urge those without insurance to visit Maryland Health Connection as soon as possible to find out about free or affordable health insurance options.

“We applaud Governor Hogan, Michele Eberle, the executive director of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, and her team for acting decisively to help Marylanders get health insurance in this challenging time.”
