Health Advocates, Elected Officials to Announce Prescription Drug Affordability Initiative
Baltimore, MD (January 6, 2017) – On Tuesday, January 10 at 10 a.m. on Lawyers’ Mall in front of the State House in Annapolis, health advocates and elected officials will announce a new Prescription Drug Affordability Initiative.
Attorney General Brian Frosh will join lead sponsors, Senator Joan Carter Conway and Delegate Eric Bromwell, and key statewide community, labor, business. health care and faith leaders to describe new legislation which they will introduce in the 2017 General Assembly Session to help make prescription drugs more affordable for Marylanders.
The proposed bills would require drug corporations to disclose the basis of their high price drugs and notify the public before substantial price increases, and give the Attorney General the authority to take legal action to stop prescription drug price gouging.
“As can be seen by the breadth of the coalition supporting our proposal and by poll results, the vast majority of Marylanders strongly support our Prescription Drug Affordability proposal,” said Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative. “We look forward to working closely with Attorney General Brian Frosh and our lead sponsors, Senator Joan Carter Conway and Delegate Eric Bromwell, as well as Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz who knows first hand how escalating drug prices are hurting local government budgets. Together, we will all make this life-saving proposal a reality.”
The Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative will also unveil a new radio ad campaign in support of the legislative proposal.
