Health Advocates Call on Gubernatorial Candidates to Endorse Health Insurance Down Payment Plan to Protect Health Care Access in Maryland

Today, the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative is sending letters to all of the major-party candidates for Governor asking them to endorse the health insurance down payment plan to replace the federal individual mandate. The letter and Candidate Statement of Support make clear that Maryland needs to enact this health insurance down payment plan to help keep health care affordable for Marylanders.  The plan would replace the federal individual mandate whose enforcement expires in 2019 with a measure which would turn federal penalties into down payments that uninsured people can use to buy health insurance.

“Maryland made important progress this year in keeping health care affordable,” said Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative. “But this progress will be undermined if we don’t enact the health insurance down payment plan to limit premium growth by getting as many young and healthy people as possible in the insurance pool. That is why we urge all candidates for governor to endorse this very important proposal.”
