Also, Vincent DeMarco, a health care advocate who championed a push to increase the alcohol tax this year, is hoping he can persuade the legislature to take up his plan to raise the tax on a pack cigarettes from $2 to $3.

DeMarco announced the tax proposal Wednesday. Under his plan, the revenue would be used to fund public health care programs.

He said the timing of his tax initiative is unrelated to the special session and that he wants to collect more support from advocacy groups before courting legislators.

“For right now, the purpose of this launch is to let the public know that we’re out there again with this proposal,” DeMarco said. “Really, the purpose here is to demonstrate how well tobacco taxes have worked.”
