Elected Officials, Health Advocates, and Consumers Gather Today to Celebrate the 8th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, and Call for Continued Action

(Baltimore, MD) The Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition will hold a press conference on Friday, March 23 at 10:00am on Lawyers Mall in Annapolis to commemorate the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. State legislators, other public officials, health advocates, and consumers who have benefited from the ACA will speak of the successes within the state and call on the Maryland General Assembly to strengthen and protect this law.  See attached information from the Maryland Health Connection on how the Affordable Care Act has benefited Maryland and see the attached report from Families USA on how we can protect the ACA success in Maryland.

“As an emergency physician, I treated patient in the ER before and after the Affordable Care Act. Before the ACA, I took care of dozens of uninsured patients every day who couldn’t afford health insurance,” said Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen. “The ACA enabled over 400,000 Marylanders to become insured. We’ve made so much progress in improving access to healthcare, and we cannot afford to toll back those gains. Maryland has never taken a back seat to public health, and I thank our legislature for their important efforts in passing the Protect Maryland Health Care Act and Basic Health Plan.”

“The Affordable Care Act has been a great success for Marylanders, and all Americans,” said Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative. “We commend the General Assembly for taking action to protect this life-saving law. We will continue to work with them to make sure Marylanders can get affordable health coverage, including by making high cost prescription drugs more affordable.”
