Open enrollment for the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange starts Friday.
This week also marks the 20th anniversary of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative, which has pushed for expanded health care coverage since the tobacco tax and alcohol tax was increased 20 years ago to fund it.
Vinny DeMarco, president of the Initiative, said Maryland is ahead of the nation when it comes to covering the uninsured, and he says the Affordable Care Act has reduced the percentage of uninsured from 12% to 6% over the last five years.
