FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Baltimore, February 5, 2018) Today, Attorney General Brian Frosh endorsed a proposal by the Maryland Health Care For All! Coalition to create a Prescription Drug Cost Commission to help make all high cost prescription drugs, including brand name drugs, more affordable for Marylanders. Senator Joan Carter Conway and Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk will be introducing legislation to create such a Commission. Below are statements by Attorney General Frosh and Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative and the Health Care For All! Coalition.“I want to congratulate the Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition and its indefatigable leader, Vinny DeMarco, for its focus on this extremely important problem.  Senator Joan Carter Conway and Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk have done a tremendous job in leading the charge in the General Assembly. The lives and health of Marylanders, and people all over the country, are threatened when the prices of medicine upon which they depend to survive and thrive are raised beyond their ability to pay.  Establishing a commission to monitor and oversee those prices is an important step to take, and we look forward to working with the Maryland Health Care For All! Coalition and the General Assembly to enact legislation to protect the health of our neighbors.” Attorney General Brian Frosh.

“We are thrilled to have Attorney General Brian Frosh’s support for our Prescription Drug Cost Commission Proposal.  Attorney General Frosh led the way to enact last year’s landmark law prohibiting price gouging by manufacturers of generic and off-patent drugs. We look forward to working with him and the Maryland General Assembly, particularly our lead sponsors Senator Joan Carter Conway and Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk, to build on this success in order to make all high cost prescription drugs, including brand name drugs, more affordable for Marylanders.” Vincent DeMarco, President, Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative and the Maryland Health Care For All! Coalition.
