Activists are urging Maryland lawmakers to prohibit drug corporations from writing off advertisements as business expenses, an act that they say would funnel millions of dollars to the state’s health care initiatives. Maryland would be the first state to eliminate state tax deductions for pharmaceutical ads.
The Maryland Senate Budget and Taxation Committee heard testimony on Senate Bill 987, which would revoke that tax deduction.
“There is no reason for Marylanders to subsidize this,” Vincent DeMarco, president of Maryland Health Care for All, said during the bill’s hearing on Wednesday. “We should put care over commercials.”
